There is a paragraph in the 1040 tax form instruction booklet on how to count/discount a dependent who was kidnapped.

What the heck is wrong with our government? I mean, seriously.

Of course, I'm trying to do my taxes by hand, referring to the instruction pdf on the computer while sitting on my couch where there isn't really enough space because I'm sitting sideways to stretch out my legs because my knees are rebelling against abuse under field conditions and really don't want to bend. So who am I to talk, I guess.

It is an unfortunate comment on our society that some parents must consider the tax ramifications of a kidnapped/missing child. Rather than being a symptom of something "wrong" with our government, it is the government's way of addressing a sad but realistic situation.

I hope that none of us ever have to consider that item on our taxes.

I mean more the syndrome of having a 2 page tax form with a 60+ page instruction book full of special exceptions, most of which require you to go get another form. Or in a larger sense, why we can't just have a relatively flat rate tax so that you don't have to itemize your personal tragedies on the tax form.

Yeah - trying to navigate the "special exceptions" is enough to give one a migraine. I think the IRS has something against trees (of course, they do try to push people into going paperless, but who does a rough draft of their taxes WITHOUT a paper copy?).

I actually want to know what the discount is for a kidnapped relative. Do you have to give the money back if they turn up?
