So here I am, after having been unnecessarily tired most of the week, and resolving not to get up until way late this morning. And what happens? I'm out of bed slightly before eight. Clearly I am not sufficiently depressed to sleep in... darn solstice. And it doesn't even happen for another week and a half. But at least the lack-of-sleep dull headache from yesterday is gone now.

Next week is going to be even more interesting, with the early work schedule continuing, and even more things to keep me up in the evenings... Not to mention probably driving down to Assessments on friday night, assuming I ever figure out where I'm going to be staying. I would be horribly tempted just not to go, except that then I'd miss all the melee stuff, and hanging out with people (including the far distant [livejournal.com profile] stanci) and that would be sad, too. I may have to go incommuincado with the world all week to use my livejournal/e-mail time after work for napping, instead...

Ok, so I got up, wrote this, got dressed, & promptly went back to bed until quarter 'till noon. I feel better now.

So I was looking at versions of "The Elfin Knight" from the Child Ballads... and most of them are fairly straightforward, where the young woman rather foolishly wishes the knight, sight unseen, were in her arms and when he appears by her bed (and often they have a dialogue about how he thinks she's awfully young, but she says she's got a younger sister who's married already) he gives her a set of impossible tasks, and she gives him back another set and thus gets to keep her maidenhead, which apparently she's decided she wants after all. (Admittedly, there's the folkloric implication of the stealing of souls or something if she doesn't outwit him.) Ok, so then there's the version with this bit, instead:

‘I hae a sister eleven years auld,
And she to the young men’s bed has made bauld.
‘And I mysell am only nine,
And oh! sae fain, luve, as I woud be thine.’

er? I'd start posing impossible tasks at that point, too.

Then there's the one [livejournal.com profile] heuchera and I turned up once and were not sure whether to be amused or horrified by: beware, it sings at you (although the best verse, about "if I can't have a man then I'll have to get a parrot" isn't in here)

I have a leather fencing doublet, and it fits! It's so nice when you can cut holes in something and sew it back together and suddenly it's all curvy in the right dimensions. Now all I need is buttons...

But at the moment, I am going to sleep, instead.
