thanate: (bluehair)
Today's salad:

-farmer's market mesclum mix (and we're having dinner guests later this week, so I could justify getting a whole pound)
-half of one of the pointy red peppers that seem to be in season
-some of the cucumber that kindly didn't melt into a puddle in the fridge while I was at pennsic
-a smallish farmer's market carrot (hm... possibly I should check on mine...)
-black olives
-a baby portabello (I've forgotten the real name when they're small...), also farmer's market
-slivered almonds
-peppercorn ranch dressing

Some things:

-pennsic is nicer when one's spouse doesn't get stuck in work purgatory (still ongoing) and actually makes it out. I came back a few days early because it had stopped being much fun anymore.

-when Taog says "the neighbors here are noisy" next to the nicest tent spot, reconsider putting the tent there. (aside from talking loudly through the night, and some guy with a gratingly fake-sounding laugh, they also smoked enough I could smell it through their plastic tent and [personal profile] grauwulf's nice canvas one. I had to pull the covers over my head for better filtration.)

-being in off-fencing mode and not having anyone to visit on the battlefield means I don't see half the people I know ever. Not sure if I should make new friends, or put more effort into tracking down the old ones... probably both.

-I find myself taking more cultural classes and walking away with exciting story ideas, rather than just a million craft projects. (so, you finally toss your vampire in the bog... what happens when someone digs him up again centuries later and doesn't recognize what he is because they think vampires are pale and sparkly?)

-I like rain better when it doesn't end up in my living space. (The tent leaks, the basement still leaks... although we may have made that bit better by closing off the french drain that goes under the sidewalk (which slopes nicely *away* from the house) and clogs up somewhere unknown. Since we've had almost 4" of rain since yesterday afternoon, it's a bit hard to tell what's better at this point.)

-Something tells me they're unlikely to start digging the foundation hole at the back of the house tomorrow. This is probably ok, since the sump pumps & back gutter would drain right into it.

-The bank sent a bunch of idiots out to "clean up" the place next door, and they chopped down all the front plantings except the two trees (one of which is the clearly dying japanese maple) and they're going to have a lot of fun with the basement if they come back Monday. I spent some time before it started pouring trying to arrange our bits of cut oak branch to make a little more shelter for the birds who have been so rudely displaced. At least they didn't seem to notice the mourning dove nesting on the porch pillar.

-In redistributing oak branches, I found a garter snake, which makes three snake species thus far for the property. I hope it doesn't get scared off by the construction.

-because there weren't enough water-related problems (the clothesline just came down, too) the dishwasher has decided that soap is optional. We don't appear to have gunked-up in-flow in the washer itself, so it's either a problem with the soap door opening at the wrong time, or something that the internet doesn't know about. I have not mucked about with anything else and tried to run the darn thing a third time yet. Ugh. (Clearly I am making up for all the water I didn't flush down toilets while at pennsic.)

-I have far too much more linen (which needs pre-washed-- I even said I wasn't going to buy any more linen this year, and um, $60 later....), several patterns I've been drooling over for some time, a list of exciting pennsic-inspired projects that I even wrote down so I might get around to some of them, a ridiculous number of little fiddly things that need to be done before they start the addition, and no particular desire to move ever again. Presumably I'll get over that latter in a day or two, in time to be traumatized by people digging up the back yard.
