So I was sitting here this afternoon, with my brain up to its elbows in novel guts, and the grauwulf wandered downstairs and said, "Don't you want to come with me to Rockville?"

Six hours later, we have returned with beads, army boots (for which grauwulf accidentally traded his hat, & will have to go back to rescue it), and a couple odds and ends from Ikea, where they did not have the bookcase I wanted to buy in stock. I did find a lovely curtain to put up to cover the window that faces the now-beige house next door-- not only did they nail up ugly beige siding over the asbestos, and cut down all the trees (to reshape the lawn into a groundwater-diverting swale, which *almost* makes sense, except for the bit that it's the wrong side of the house) but they have now painted the pretty wood deck the same beige as the siding. Every bit of it, including the floorboards. I am not convinced that I want to live next to anyone who would voluntarily choose a uniformly beige (with white accents) house with no landscaping, but at least I have now got a curtain to put up so that I won't have to look at it from my bedroom.

After several go-rounds of the carpet we wanted not passing quality control, I went and picked out a different kind on Tuesday that was confirmed to be already made and in stock (after spending a disturbingly long time trying to get the salesman to understand that no, I didn't want recyclable carpet, I wanted one with recycled content, because the fact that somebody puts a little arrowy triangle on it is not all I want out of life.) As of yesterday, the replacement carpet has landed locally, and they'll be out to install it on Tuesday morning. This means I get to try to make it possible for people to bring large rolls of carpet up the stairs without breaking anything, and the grauwulf has put forth great amounts of productivity and built the ladder to get up into the loft. It's very exciting, and I should take pictures of these things at some point...
