So, the Thursday before last the people who are supposed to be building our deck e-mailed grauwulf to say that instead of the second week of October, they were sending a team out to start last Wednesday. So that kicked off a week of my wrangling sick toddler (there are consequences for chewing on random crap while camping...) and move the compost pile and pseudo-potting shed, and dig up the corners of garden bed that they're setting posts in. Oh, and with the Baltimore Book Fest & some crazy paper-writing frenzy from grauwulf in the middle of it. And then (why are we surprised?) they tore down the old deck, dug some post holes, and it started raining. Theoretically there will be something that looks like progress tomorrow.
Meanwhile, we are left to ponder the mysteries of the two holes in which the collected water turned distinctly blue.
We're doing an advent-style harvest & Hallowe'en decorating festival for the month of October. (possibly inspired by too many pinterest hallowe'en decoration posts...) We began with putting up the horse skull on its post in front of the front porch (tied to the railing in case of winds).
Day two, we went out shopping for things like plastic spiders & stick-on wall bats. I have not yet found sufficiently inspiring carveable fake pumpkins, but I feel like this is the sort of thing one makes one of a year & stashes in the attic until you've got enough for a doorway arch. (ha.) Hallowe'en shopping with the Megatherium was slightly complicated by her initial fascination with the decor displays at Spirit Halloween, until she stepped on one of their "step here!" triggers and the Cerberus she'd just finished petting barked at her. Then she insisted that I pick her up and "Not step on anything." (I explained how the triggers were clearly labeled, but she wasn't having any of it. I also might have said something about thinking people who want to dress their yards up like horror movies were pretty silly, but in all fairness they probably think I'm pretty silly, too.)
Yesterday we did some ridiculous gel window clings, and today we spookified the bathroom soap dispenser by dropping in a bracelet's worth of plastic skull beads and two plastic spiders. Tomorrow, if it continues cold enough to have the heat on, I'm thinking pumpkin spice cake or maybe candying the little pumpkin the Megatherium picked out at the grocery store a little while back.
So far the front-runner costume idea is to be a green Megatherium. :) (we'll see if it lasts.)
