music question:

A couple people have been posting some of their most favorite and meaningful songs, and I have been thwarted in doing likewise since mine are not sufficiently popular to be on You-Tube. (My two most-listened-to songs ever are Jonatha Brooke's cover of "Bleecker Street", off of a Greenwich Village in the 60s tribute album of the same name, and "This is Me" by Eddie from Ohio. I would not swear to a complete understanding of what either of them is about.) However, in the process of searching down something else, I discovered the band Pentangle, and that I really like their versions of traditional songs ("the leaves do grow green", "sovay", "the house carpenter"...) but don't particularly care for their more modern stuff at all.

Is anyone else familiar with the band, and could you possibly recommend a CD or two that's mostly traditional rather than recently-authored? I could start downloading single songs from Amazon or somewhere, I suppose, but I'm also having trouble telling what's what when I don't actually recognize the song titles.

Most of the complete CDs you're going to find are going to have a mix of styles on it. Cruel Sister is their only album of entirely traditional songs.

The songs I think of as essential by them:

A Woman Like You (but that may be too modern for your taste)
Let No Man Steal Your Time
I Loved A Lass (my favorite version of that song)
Light Flight
Once I Had A Sweetheart
Cruel Sister
Lord Franklin
So Clear

A large portion of their songs are available free and legally (you get three listens for free) at last.fm: http://www.last.fm/music/The+Pentangle/+tracks - look for the ones that say "full track"

Also, if you like the Pentangle style and aren't familiar with them, be sure to check out Fairport Convention (start with Liege and Lief) and Steeleye Span (ask leimon_malakoi about Alison Gross).

Random tangent - Eddie from EFO was one of the music teachers at my Jr/Sr High school. Made working with him years later slightly amusing.

I've got a couple Steeleye Span albums, and in my faire days I was introduced to someone who was part of Fairport Convention back in the day (although for the life of me I can't remember who it was now...) although I've never quite gotten around to looking up their music properly.
