I keep opening the lj entries of people with ad-sponsored accounts and getting huge pop-up things that gray out the page you're looking at and won't allow you to close them until they've fully loaded. Has anyone else been having trouble with this? There are a few things I haven't commented on because I closed the window rather than deal with waiting ten seconds for an ad I didn't want to see to load.

(I'm particularly wondering if those of you with paid accounts get exempted from this, as every so often I contemplate upgrading... on the one hand, I like my basic account; it has everything I need, and I won't be able to get it back if I change my mind, but on the other I do use this an awful lot, and possibly it would be the thing to pay for my web hosting, so to speak.)

Yep, paid accounts do not see ads. It's glorious.

Interesting! I've not ever seen these ads and was stumped by your post until I read the comment above. Sounds like that alone would be worth the price of admission! And there's a pun in there, too.

It's a little manipulative, though, to have a policy that you can still have a no-ad basic account, but you get driven away from your friends' ad-based journals unless you upgrade to pay. Ugh.

I wasn't even aware the ad policy on lj had gotten worse until now.

I get those pop ups when I look at your page and am not logged in.... (lots of the time)

I've never seen a popup add on anyone's journal. Adblock on Firefox and disabled pop-ups take care of them 99.9% of the time. Every now and then an ad banner will load on Y!J but that's usually it.

Er... you shouldn't. I *don't* have an ad sponsored account, and at least as I look at my account, I don't see ads on it. (If you're sure they're putting pop-ups on a basic account, please do double-check and let me know, since that would definitely be cause to complain.)

So basically you're saying I need to migrate to Firefox to solve the problem?

I can write that same script into safari for you. Don't know why I didn't think of that. Good call [livejournal.com profile] scraun23

there are a few things already out there that do this. I don't use Safari, so I don't know if they are any good, but...
