We picked up an EPA-approved lead paint test kit at the hardware store this morning (and failed to get any cedar boards for bookshelf building, as the entire selection of 8' lengths was warped, cracking, or moldy-- usually at least two of three) and that has got to be one of the most comforting $27 I've ever spent. I did five of the six samples in various rooms, scraping test squares all the way down to the wood/plaster, and couldn't find significant amounts of lead anywhere. How in the world this happened in the house where no home improvement project takes less than 3 times the effort expected of it, I have no idea, but I can now scrape up and sand down all the stupid chipping paint upstairs with a clear conscience, and repaint the nursery-to-be whatever color I darn well please. Yay!

I think this calls for a celebratory putting together of the large wooden velociraptor skeleton we found at goodwill yesterday. And more food. I haven't eaten in several hours, so it's time to do that again...

That's a relief.

Definitely. Based on the age of the house, there was less than a 20% chance of not having lead paint somewhere.
