Has anyone got a recommendation for a good history of ancient China?
I'm presently curious about the early empire and the ghastliness before that, but as I know sadly little about ancient east Asia as a whole, I could easily be interested in other things as well. (This is the result of watching too many silly PBS specials while sweater-finishing-- their "Secrets of the Dead" episode on the clay warrior army only had about 5 minutes of historical overview, and I realized that aside from tidbits like the 4000-year-old noodles, most of what I know about early China comes from Barry Hugart books.)
