I too have noticed the outsize effect that choice of platform has on who one remains friends with. There are people I've been sorry to lose touch with when they went to exclusively-Facebook, but... not sorry enough to join Facebook. I really prefer long-form blogging, apparently. Stubbornly. A lot. When I think wistfully about the people that I'd keep in touch with if I caved, I remedy that sadness by thinking about all the annoying adjacent people that I currently never have to deal with, heh. But it is a loss, and a real one. I regret that I have no better way to keep in touch when I do want to.
