Rain has arrived, but the wind is still mostly light and intermittent. We're as weatherized as we're liable to get, and the builders left yesterday evening with instructions to call them if anything goes wrong. (Of course, if anything goes majorly wrong, it's likely to be because of storm conditions I'm not about to ask anyone to drive through, but we appreciate the sentiment.) The people next door made a rather half-hearted attempt at cleaning up, complete with leaving a bag of shingles hanging off the scaffolding that's still up between our houses right next to the powerline. I went over and tossed all the plastic bottles & cups they'd left lying around into the garage in the back (and if anyone's looking for someplace to shoot some low budget horror movie footage, I highly recommend that as a location) but the broken glass on the back porch is Someone Else's Problem.

[personal profile] grauwulf has gone off to work *again* but in theory should be back mid-afternoon, and then able to spend the rest of the weekend helping me build a couch fort or something. We're also prepped for a couple days of power & water outage, but on the whole it looks like we're enough inland and far enough uphill that we're not really likely to have a lot of trouble. Both my parents (in NoVa's fail-if-you-sneeze power grid and out of town so they can't run the generator) and my grandparents (on a heavily forested lot much too near NYC) are in more trouble than we are, but there isn't a lot I can do about that.

So, what we find is that "weatherized" means walls and floors up:

Xposty from dreamwidth, but yes, I'm still here.

[personal profile] grauwulf: I've got your hipbones.
me: No you don't.
[personal profile] grauwulf: I have a knife. I could.
me: But then what would you do with them? They're not big enough to make a harp.

It's a bit dangerous to go to pennsic without a shopping agenda; this year I got a couple of the rings I'd been vaguely coveting last year, and then a couple more, because they were also neat, and not quite as expensive... The horse is ancient Greek, molded off of something out of Gaukler's personal collection. The little red thing is the cheap modern version of a medieval style, and I just liked the oak leaves. The other one is a "memento mori" with a silly little lopsided skull at the beginning (which is the reason I didn't buy it last year, as I like the ring-with-text idea, but the skull is a bit silly, and they didn't have any other text I cared for.)

At any rate, the guy I bought it from asked me who I was getting it for (to remember, that is) and I said something along the lines of, "er, no one." He said that was his favorite answer; I've always been under the impression that the proper translation is "remember death" rather than "remember the dead" (though given my *phenomenal grasp* of ancient languages, I have only other people's words for this) and I've been wearing it recently by way of the reminder. Time is limited, and while one may well have to spend a bunch of it on the toilet or washing dirty socks or whatever, it's a waste to spend all your time on things that make you unhappy.

We had the first tree down here a little over an hour ago, a couple houses up the street on the far side. It fell straight over and landed tidily between a parked car and the power lines without so much as brushing either.
