me: But then what would you do with them? They're not big enough to make a harp.

It's a bit dangerous to go to pennsic without a shopping agenda; this year I got a couple of the rings I'd been vaguely coveting last year, and then a couple more, because they were also neat, and not quite as expensive... The horse is ancient Greek, molded off of something out of Gaukler's personal collection. The little red thing is the cheap modern version of a medieval style, and I just liked the oak leaves. The other one is a "memento mori" with a silly little lopsided skull at the beginning (which is the reason I didn't buy it last year, as I like the ring-with-text idea, but the skull is a bit silly, and they didn't have any other text I cared for.)

At any rate, the guy I bought it from asked me who I was getting it for (to remember, that is) and I said something along the lines of, "er, no one." He said that was his favorite answer; I've always been under the impression that the proper translation is "remember death" rather than "remember the dead" (though given my *phenomenal grasp* of ancient languages, I have only other people's words for this) and I've been wearing it recently by way of the reminder. Time is limited, and while one may well have to spend a bunch of it on the toilet or washing dirty socks or whatever, it's a waste to spend all your time on things that make you unhappy.

We had the first tree down here a little over an hour ago, a couple houses up the street on the far side. It fell straight over and landed tidily between a parked car and the power lines without so much as brushing either.

OMG, A!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE those rings - all of them! - and I LOVE the look you've achieved. Where on earth did you get the oak leaves and how did you measure for that placement? Do you have trouble keeping it on?

I want a memento mori ring....and I adore text rings - my first wedding band was textual. I'm shopping for a sterling skull ring...and finding it hard to find "feminine" versions. I want those oak leaves!

Thanks. The thing about pennsic is that there are a bunch of vendors who've just got trays of rings out that you can try on for size; the memento mori also fits the middle joint of my middle and first fingers, but if it's too cold it rubs on the bones in my knuckle joint, so a lot of sizing & comfort depends on temperature. The oak leaves was actually an odd note out of a tray of much more normal silver stuff, and that's actually the largest of the three they had (no idea how they thought people were supposed to wear it, but that's where it fit on my hand.)
