thanate: (bluehair)
They finished the siding on the downhill side of the house on Tuesday (or was that Monday?) and closed in the last bit of wall and got all the insulation up on the uphill side yesterday. Last night, after trying to go to bed early & failing to get to sleep very effectively, I woke up a little after midnight to the smell of gas, and we trouped down to the basement to shut off the water heater (now cleverly vented into the new attic) and then the gas upon discovering the meter continued to seep slowly after everything else was shut off. We're pretty sure the stupid plumbing people joggled some pipes, on both the intake & outflow sides of the water heater.

Fortunately, we have a new highly glamorous high efficiency (vented through PVC!) water heater sitting in its box in the living room, but that has to wait for either [personal profile] grauwulf to get time to install it, or for me to teach myself how to do so. This is not a gas & plumbing starter project I'm really wild about, so I think it can wait for this weekend. Meanwhile, I am cooking dinner in the rice cooker, since I wasn't home to start a crock pot dinner this morning, and didn't go out to buy bits for a fully microwaveable dinner this afternoon.

What I did do this morning was go in an hour early to the aquarium to help with a moving things about project that needed to happen before they opened for visitors, and which ended up less than half done because the freight elevator broke. So I ended up with a nice long time to stand around and watch the octopus eat his lunch, which was pretty cool. (The current octopus is not the least bit shy about the viewing window, and has just been cleared for non-flash photography. I think his name is Donnie, but you might ask a floor volunteer about that if you go see him-- which I recommend for interested parties.)

The rest of today was slightly more productive than you might expect from around six hours of very interrupted sleep, though I did get home and was quite confused by the complete lack of contractors both here and next door. I think our guys are waiting on the structural inspection tomorrow, and reputedly the plumbers are coming back so [personal profile] grauwulf can tell them they're idiots.
