until we are invisible...
Jan. 7th, 2009 04:49 pmI have far too many browser windows open. By which I mean 18 of the things, and I'm not counting tabs, and thus, it is VERY MUCH time to decant whatever it was I wanted to say or do about these things and close them all.
So, we have the unpleasant realities:
the Not-Rape crisis which I was going to say something about, a long time ago, and I'm no longer sure quite what it was. I'm never quite sure how I feel about this sort of thing, since I'm the girl who never had to worry about it. Combination of being very lucky, well-cared for as a child, having innate good taste in boys (even if most of them weren't interested in me), and, well, not being the sort of person who wants to go out and get into the situations where this kind of thing more often happens... And I did learn about harassment and statutory rape in sex-ed.
and the OMG aren't you people LISTENING?? cool mom picks comprehensive linkage listing for save handmade... and if you have a moment, please, please, please, just take the time to vote about it on change.org... yes, you have to sign up, but you can tell them never to contact you again, and they'll do that. I'm sorry to keep harping on it, but really-- is providing a bit of individuality and affordable clothing to the under-12 population of the US (and keeping crazy amounts of new or near-new stuff out of the landfills) less important than things like arguing about prop8 or doing your meme-of-the-day?
For the essayists, or readers of essays:
grauwulf just set up an essay-posting community called
essaysoapbox. So far I'm the only one to have joined, and he's the only one to post, but if you're feeling miscellaneously ranty, feel free to drop by.
And then the interesting stuff:
I just ordered the Ravens in the Library benefit anthology-- it's what looks to be a fantastic collection of short stories (or at least the author list is pretty promising) with various cool artwork as well, put together entirely to help cover emergency healthcare costs for the singer SJ Tucker, who's a ren-faire style pagan artist with a fantastic voice. She sings about pirates and pagan things and random stuff in general, and you can listen to her albums online here.
I have been reading The Orphan's Tales by Catherynne M Valente, and I recommend them. They are arabian nights style nested fairytales, only with interconnecting purpose behind them, and the more you read, the more little bits you fill in of what was behind and around the other bits you've already read. And, if you're interested, she has just begun podcasting bits of her (informal) readings of them, for free, to all who want to listen. so go here to be read to... it's not audiobook quality; there are occasional slips, and I don't always agree with her phrasing and pronunciations, but even so, I didn't have much trouble falling into the story.
And lastly, for those of you who like sex in your fiction: check out Palimpsest forthcoming at the end of February. It looks like it's going to be pretty fantastic, if a bit more racy than I prefer. And there's a trailer (which I would link directly to youtube, only I've managed to misplace how...) and a short story that came before there was a book.
and now I am down to the doll head search, and a crochet pattern I might make, if only I could find a smaller hook, and the map to where I'm going for dinner tonight. I think I need a keyboard shortcut that types target="_blank" for me.
