leaving the house

grauwulf doesn't have the vacation to do even a full-week marathon, and while thus far my pennsic experience has been two weeks (saturday to saturday) camping in the lovely shady cool bog, until I can't stand being outside anymore and my lungs are black from the tiki-smoke, Dahlradia isn't really welcoming to late-period strangers who aren't there for set-up, and my old little back corner tent space wouldn't work out for a giant 2 person plus armor plus wardrobe etc tent anyway. Unlike my camp host, pennsic is not so important to me that I'm going to insist on going & camping with *my camp* whether my husband can go or not; I think I'd feel a bit silly doing that, actually. grauwulf has suggested talking to a handful of various serengetti camps (as he likes being close to the fighting, and complains that the bog is noisy) but I am skeptical. I want trees, darn it. And in the end, not having done anything about it, I am wondering if we'd actually be better off just registering as the two of us and seeing where we end up.
Meanwhile, I've been reading about how awesome Readercon is, and lamenting the fact that it's in early July and all the way to MA. (GoGaDoll sounds like it'll be pretty awesome, too, particularly since I actually sort-of know more people who are going to be there this year, and thus might interact with them & stuff, instead of wandering around as a dazed observer, but SF is too far for this year.) And again, there's this thing withgrauwulf's actually having to work real hours. (Don't get me wrong; I'm not opposed to people having real jobs; I've just been spoiled by working in a field where I can take off anytime I want and just not get paid.) Also again, I could see about just going by myself, since I think most of the other people I'd expect to be interested are busy then too (doing stuff like going to Ireland?) but I think I'd do better with the networking with moral support. And, and... all those things. Rude to go to cool cons without husband, (who am I going to discuss the finer points of experience with?) terribly frivolous anyway, (well, except perhaps for the potential networking/publishing industry insights?) far far away, hotels cost money I could be spending buying blueberry bushes or materials to make a coat closet, and stuff.
What I definitely am doing is going to see Arcadia at the Folger tonight, and Highland River Melees on Saturday, appallingly early in the morning, to helpgrauwulf set up the rapier field he's in charge of. And presumably fighting-- haven't really done that in a while, excepting a practice or two. No one has called me on the amount I feel like I'm flailing wildly, though, so I'm guessing it's just that my muscles are still up to speed when needed while my conscious tracking of actions has slowed back down again from disuse.
If I'm not completely dead by Sunday, I'm going to try to make it down to the doll meet in DC this weekend, as well. I haven't been to a local meet in about a year and a half, and it's about time I stopped making vague longing comments about how nice it would be to play with dolls, and do something about it.
And today, I have scavenged rocks from the pile that our neighbor dug out of his back yard to line the tiny corner between the walkway and the front of the porch, where I'm hoping to raise the soil enough to have room plant a blueberry bush. The barberry that was there was ok with the fact that the splashed concrete from the porch footer takes up most of the dirt space, but I'm told that a blueberry with surface roots won't do so well. Alternately, I may take my mother's advice and use it as a relatively contained space to plant mint. We shall see.
