I had a rather awful headache last night, so I went out this morning to plant the cute little thread-leaf tickseed I'd bought yesterday, and coming around the back of the house, the parking area looked suspiciously green.

[personal profile] grauwulf does not take the pictures I would take, but the vehicle you can't see between the shed and my little white toyota (who made it through without a scratch) is the box trailer that took most of the weight. There was also a 5" branch on the roof of the Saturn, which left a dent that [personal profile] grauwulf was able to punch out once he got the car out of there, and the maple trees lost a couple smaller branches. The trailer has a noticeable dent in the corner of the roof, and was actually knocked off the jacks holding it up, so most probably the trailer frame and the spongy mix of black mud & gravel everything is parked on took most of the shock.

The tree (which is on county property, and has been leaning precariously since we got here but weathering nasty storms just fine) was probably not helped by the idiot neighbor cutting into its roots for his vegetable garden, but the part where it sheared off was pretty well rotting and crossed with termite tracks. On the whole, we are completely astonished by two things: first, that we didn't hear it come down (and it was a still, quiet night) and second, that it did so little damage doing so. The trailer may be totaled, on the bits & pieces sort of technicality, but neither car, the shed, or any of my plants sustained notable damage, and [personal profile] grauwulf scored a tree removal team who could come to get the thing out of here immediately on the second phone call.

By this afternoon, I should be able to return to my regularly scheduled removing of baby praying mantises (I'm up to five-- four in the 1cm length, one closer to 1.5") from the house, and deciding where I need freshly chopped oak mulch.

Yikes!!!!! To have a tree of that size cut and removed here would be 1K!! Will the County pay for this????

No, but the insurance will, under the trailer deductible. We're still trying to convince the county to run snow plows up the alleyway there, something that would be helped by either us or them knowing what the official alley number is-- the maps they have online don't even appear to have the road the alley is off of or our row of houses on them (all built c. 1930, so um, no idea what's up with that.)

And yeah, it was a little more than that here, though we had them leave the wood.
