we have a basement! and Plans!

Yesterday it rained, and besides us running out at six thirty in the morning to pull the tarp over the hole, nothing much happened. Today the block guys came back and finished up:

Next door, they're doing the roof, and the mourning dove is traumatized:


And, as it was pointed out, possibly you might like to know what it is we're doing:


Currently the house is a 25x25 foot square for the basement & main floor, with a gable roof pushed out for the front bedroom, and a short wall along the back on the 2nd floor where it hits the very steep back roof pitch.

Side view, and the original idea of a very flat roof has been amended to raising the peak so that the new peak will be right over the current short wall:


Basement, pretty basic, with new glamorous staircase that doesn't have narrow sharp turns to navigate with the laundry basket. As yet it is undecided whether this will be a storage room or a grauwulf office/dungeon, but I think the current basement is getting cleared out and we're moving the TV down there.


Meanwhile, we will be moving the laundry operation (and the catbox) upstairs, adding a second bathroom, and (ooh, glamorous!) a coat closet:


...And, pushing back to that half wall for a giant bedroom, with a giant walk-in closet, and a giant cathedral ceiling. The back corner of not-closet is going to host bookshelves & a comfy chair of some sort, or possibly a window seat.

This is such a HUGE project - I'm really impressed!

It definitely feels like one of those things that's bigger on the inside than the outside; we're not losing a lot of back yard (especially since that bit was a strip of daffodils & then hillside anyway), but we're very nearly doubling the amount of useful space in the house.
