I haven't seen any rabbits since they terrorized the yard next door, and darn few birds since our construction started. But I've put down all the oak trimmings in branchlets around the garden beds to build up shelter for now and soil for later, and despite big stompy boots coming down on my ferns occasionally, the main thing that's suffering from the construction is the lawn, which I've never been too worried about.

When they did all the cleaning up yesterday, they pulled the giant stack of boxes off the front lawn and left behind a snakeskin:

I'd been hearing someone crinkling about a bit in the leaves at the back of the front garden, but I had no idea it was so large. Based on who I've seen around the area before, my best guess is that this guy is a black snake, who will probably be moving on pretty soon in search of something larger than crickets to munch on. If it doesn't, I'll know we've either got more stealth wildlife, or have lost a few really stupid sparrows.

Also, a plant:

This is called horseweed. Isn't it cute? My mother, with whom I've had these conversations before, says, "Well, it's native, but most people pull it out when they find it." I said quite cheerfully that it turned up on its own, and looked happy, which was enough for me. Also, I considered cutting off the seeds before it spread, but it does this clever little thing where it blooms & seeds continuously over the same length, so it just wasn't worth it. When it gets in the way I'll pull it up, but meanwhile it's something else green & happy in the garden, so what's the harm?
