land of bagel shops and honey

thanateThe last time I got on a plane was the trip to England a little over three years ago (er, from which I still haven't posted pictures...) and for some reason I keep expecting Boston to be London. The hotel we're staying in doesn't help; it is the Hotel Buckminster, stuffed into a narrow little corner between sharply angled cross-streets where it may well once have been several buildings. Our room is perhaps 10x12' with a closet & bathroom tacked on, and a deeply set window taller than I am that sticks its head up into a narrow pocket a couple feet above the dropped (but still high) ceiling of the rest of the room. Oh, and it looks out into a 5-story court yard, floored with rubber roofing... The whole place is very corner & pockety, full of that weird sort of organic architectural clashes you get in very old buildings.
Unfortunately, every other time we walk through the lobby, they are playing yet another rather terrible version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."
At any rate, BU has been observed, we've wandered the aquarium, Quincy Market & environs, the Maparium, the top of the Prudential Building, and more than one rather nice coffee shop. And I went to Pandemonium Books yesterday, too. Tomorrow, we return to the poor cat, who (with luck) was not locked in the basement by the electricians yesterday. (I'm not actually terribly worried about this, but they *would* keep leaving the door open.) A real return to the internets will commence when we get back.
