Has anyone got a recommendation for a good history of ancient China?

I'm presently curious about the early empire and the ghastliness before that, but as I know sadly little about ancient east Asia as a whole, I could easily be interested in other things as well. (This is the result of watching too many silly PBS specials while sweater-finishing-- their "Secrets of the Dead" episode on the clay warrior army only had about 5 minutes of historical overview, and I realized that aside from tidbits like the 4000-year-old noodles, most of what I know about early China comes from Barry Hugart books.)

I mostly picked up what I know from osmosis and various Asiapac comics that use history anecdotally in the context of translating strategy manuals.

My mom's been taking courses, though, so I'll see if she has any books to recommend.

Thanks. I'd appreciate that. :)
