Did my aquarium volunteer shift yesterday morning, followed by a bit of writing in Baltimore (and added another POV character after all. We may end up with Magde instead of Theo, which is at least nice in that I can look at the Empire's culture from an outsider viewpoint, though I'm not sure if it helps with the possession angle.) At any rate, then I went off to sort dead bugs for Master Naturalist volunteer hours only to discover once I got to Columbia that our fearless leader was down with the sick and so there was no sorting to be done. So I took the chance to go visit the thrift store on discount day, and spent a shocking $25 or so to acquire two more pairs of pants that actually fit right now, another tunic-ish top, a bed sheet printed with colorful robots (destined to become baby quilt backing) and about eight or ten relatively inoffensive onesies. Interestingly, after dithering over the girls' section for some time and picking out two things that may not fit the kid until next fall, I discovered that the boys' section not only has all the more-or-less-neutrals in it, but the price points are generally about a dollar cheaper per garment. Ironically, I picked up an exact duplicate of something I'd passed up in the girls' section for 50 cents cheaper... when the girls' one was the one that was slightly stained. Thank you, world, for your good sense and consistency. Anyway, between that and two people who've said they have small boxes of newborn stuff for me, I'm feeling slightly less wildly unprepared on that front.
I'm also being virtuous and resisting the siren call of the big Sugarloaf Craft Fair on the grounds that I can't actually think of anything I want to get there, and I don't really need to drive to Gaithersburg on a friday just to stare at cool stuff. I'm sure I'll come up with something on Monday, once it's too late.
Wednesday evening we had a class on late pregnancy and birth, which included a great deal of actually useful information like how to tell when one is in labor, and some slightly less useful things such as that it's a bad idea to have sex after one's water breaks. (I think I can handle that one.) Rather disturbed by the 30+% rate of c-sections (I am strongly opposed to being cut open without severe medical need, which I don't feel things like breached birth ought to be) but overall they seem pretty sane about letting me choose my anesthetic and mobility levels, and not immediately carrying off the baby unless there's an actual reason to do so, so I'm fairly optimistic. It also turns out that the hospital we're going to is only about three miles away from here with several routes of easy back road access, so we will definitely not have to try to get into center city Baltimore in rush hour traffic & a snow storm or anything. Good to know.
