Let's see... the Megatherium* has passed her first two doctor's appointments with flying colors, and was up an ounce and a half from her birth weight yesterday morning. We've had to put her back in disposable diapers for a little (boo!) because the cloth ones were just a little too large and kept irritating her cord stump, but as soon as we have a partially submersible baby (rather than "care method: wipe with damp cloth") that should cease to be a problem. It had never previously occurred to me that there might be circumstances under which I would find the noisier bodily functions to be cute, or giggle maniacally as a response to being peed upon (there was diaper seal failure...) but clearly babies are a form of temporary insanity.

We're doing pretty well with 4-hour blocks of sleep overnight (though last night less so) but I am down to only about 10lbs over where I started, and have rediscovered COLD; am taking thought to good things to keep on the bedside table upstairs for middle-of-the-night snack.

Anyway, in her more active sleep phases, the child does this thing where she will fling up her arms in explosive startlement, fingers outstretched. Half the time it's entirely her startling herself, too. This has yet to wake her up, so far as we can tell. (Her unsympathetic parents have a tendency to exclaim things like, "Boom! 'Splody baby!" at her, which also doesn't seem to bother her sleep in the least. Sleeping seems to be something she's pretty good at. Except at 2 in the morning.)

BOOM!

In action:

At rest, post-explosion.

Aside from nursing and changing diapers and watching the baby sleep, I'm also slowly reclaiming cooking and things, have sent out the first few baby announcement/year-in-review letters, and even wrote a couple more sentences on this darn story that I've been picking at since last fall. (And then I got distracted mid-word, and all I know is that whatever was about to come next began with an h. Oh well.)

*yes, I am calling my child after an extinct giant ground sloth. Why, is that weird or something?

I always wonder what tiny babies dream about. Maybe falling.

She's so cute! And, is it me or does she look like Melchior?

Lots of people keep saying that-- we don't see it as much (to me she looks a whole lot like my baby pictures) but she's definitely got his fingernails & toe proportions, and his hiccups, which she'll hate when she's older, poor thing. :)
