Has anybody got experience with using one of those wooden cookie rolling pins with the carved stamp designs? My grandmother brought one back with her from a trip to Germany in 1992, and just gave it to me over thanksgiving in the hope that I'd make use of it. It's unfinished wood, & I've trimmed off the most obvious of the splintery bits, but I'm not sure a) how smooth a surface I need for it to work on nice cold shortbread dough, or b) if there's anything I ought to do with it (treat it with cutting-board oil? wet or freeze it?) before trying to use it.

Cool! I have never heard of them and would love to hear of your experience with it once you've actually used it. :)

As long as the shortbread dough is cold, I have found that flouring is enough, but your pin may vary.

I've only used for springerle cookies. Flour well and it should be fine. Hmm... now looking at the date you posted this and realizing you've probably done the cookie thing already. How did it turn out? Happy Christmas and birthday!

Ah, optimism! Cookies will happen eventually, but I've been mostly dragging M out of the cat food bowls any time I try to do something in the kitchen. Whee!

Happy Christmas to you as well. :)
