So, I've done it... I just ordered a serger. (from Amazon, and it's an inexpensive machine that comes with a great many recommendations, including from people I actually know... although it's backordered, so who knows when I'll actually get it) And it's possible I'll be somewhat disappointed with the auto-gathering function (the product description didn't go into that in detail, and [livejournal.com profile] belfebe hasn't tried hers) but since I've never *had* an auto gathering function to play with, and I've always been kind of concerned about the amount of math and trusting the sewing machine's settings it takes, if it doesn't work out I won't be that disappointed. And then there will be serged seams, and fake modern rolled hems-- think napkin edges with the thread overcast around them (as opposed to just the actually rolled kind I can do on my sewing machine) and other fun toys to play with, and I will have to make some non-SCA clothes again. It'll be fun, right? :)

...and there was this theory I had that I wasn't allowed to own a TV before owning a serger... not that I need a tv for anything, or have anywhere to put one... It's just one of those random things in my head like being old enough I'm allowed to go mad (which I haven't particularly done, either.)

Which one did you order?

the $200 brother machine. (1034D)... both Bel and Seamus have it, and are happy with it, and I think there were all of about three negative reviews on amazon, two of which were from people who got sent the one with the european wiring by mistake.

Cool. I'm pretty sure that Simona bought the same one, but I haven't heard yet how she likes it.

Yes, and it's not bad.

Just don't try to sew curved lines. Sergers don't really like curves.

It saved a bunch of time on stitching turkish tunics and pants right before pennsic, though. So it was a good investment.

I'm going to play more with it when I get a chance... maybe over winter break?

So how old are you allowed to be until you go mad?

(also, I am jealous of your serger)

I decided some long time ago (I think when I was 20... it was winter term, anyway, so I guess I just had nothing better to do) that I wouldn't go mad until I turned 27. It was a great comfort to me at the time, on the grounds that this was so far away surely I'd have worked everything out so that I wouldn't need to go mad by now...

Although now I'm sort of wondering if I make it all the way to december without going mad, do I go back to not being allowed to when I'm 28? Sort of like I missed my chance and now it's tacky... :)

You needn't be jealous of something I haven't *got* yet.

Any particular grounds for picking 27? Or did it just seem like a good number at the time?

I like the number seven? It seemed far away? (it was far away, come to think of it...) It was one of those thoughts that just happened all at once, so I don't think I actually went through a particular rationale to get there.
