There's a sign up in the Taco Bell down the road, which looks quite new, advertising that they're safe for lent. Which, once you read the whole thing and discover that what they're actually saying is anything can be made vegetarian upon request, makes sense to say. But lent? In September?

One of the Chinese buffet restaurants around here leaves its Lent sign up year-round. It's an ad for shrimp if I remember correctly.

Only I'd swear it wasn't there the last time I was in that taco bell-- which was during last lent. Oh well.

Why lent... I don't understand that.

Lent is a Catholic tradition that has nothing to do with Vegetarian. Now if they were focussing on theo other religions that do encourage vegetarian ways of life.

I mean Rosh Hashanah is this week, but last I checked that wasn't a vegetarian celebration. And Idon't think any resturant will be Yom Kippur friendly, especially since its a fasting time until the big feast... and I doubt that feast will be Taco Bell....

So why lent?

You're not supposed to eat meat during lent... or at least fridays in lent, in the more relaxed modern versions. Fish only, or something like that. Originally it was no meat, no dairy, and no eggs for lent or any other days of fast, which included fridays all year. But I'm not sure how many people actually follow that anymore, and I can't say that fast food, even rendered veggie, seems to me to be in the spirit of fasting, somehow. So no, I have no idea why this is either a marketing concern for taco bell, or a useful way to advertize their optional lack of meat. Maybe it's a hispanic-target thing, on the grounds that most of them are Catholic?
