Just finished the serger part of project #1 (pants, cut out while I was still working temporarily at the fabric store the winter/spring before last) They look a little funny because, much as I love the fabric, I forgot how odd I think stripey pants look. And there was minor weirdness with one of the topstitched seams, which I guess I could redo if it bothers me too much. But they are done except for buttonholes & buttons (on the regular sewing machine) and the serger is worthy. Even if playing musical sewing machines is not something I actually have space for. Only the one desk, and too much stuff on it already. (although if I finish some projects, that'll be less clutter...) And not (as tradition will have it) difficult to thread... it may have 4 threads to sort out, but each one of them is slightly less complicated than a standard machine's top thread. Next I shall have to play with the "rolled" narrow hem feature. And auto-gathering. mmm, ruffles...

Right. buttonholes. La, la, la...

So what exactly does a serger *do*?

sews overlock seams (look at the inside of most store-bought garments) and the hems that have thread enclosing the entire edge. And a couple other related things. And it's got a knife blade that trims the seams before sewing over them.... which as long as you don't cut too much off, or ever want to let out your seams is a great feature.

you topstitched with the serger? What am I missing here?
Congrats on getting it running. I kind of enjoyed threading my mother's serger. Mmmm, stripes. Mmmm, plaid. (it's fall -- I'm allowed to indulge the plaid fixation; though perhaps not in pants)

Wicked woman. I've convinced myself that I don't want or need a serger, so don't you tell me how great it is. :)

I've been contemplating getting one off and on for the past... seven and a half years, I think. Obviously it's totally possible to live without. It's just a fun toy to play with if you have it.
