So I took my computer in to get fixed in a hurry, because I didn't want the monitor to break or anything. And I didn't think of backing it up until after I got home again. And the guy in the apple store who processed my request (which said on the repair request sticker on the outside of the computer: "broken hinge") didn't bother to ask me if I wanted to back it up first, which apparently they do in-house (I didn't know that before either)

And the --- [rat bastards? was that it?]-- decided that for some unspecified (literally) reason of their own the hard drive needed to be replaced. And they took it out, and threw it away.

the last back-up was at the end of last october.

I have just lost one and a half novels, all my e-mail and contact info from the last 11 months, most recent resume with contact info for two employers, most of the working copies of the music I was recording, a great deal (I'm not even sure what yet) of the music I had in iTunes, goodness knows what all junk I was working on in my website folder... and I won't remember what else until I'm looking for things I don't have anymore. And I can't even re-install the latest system because I don't have the system disks for X.3, and X.4 won't install without it. Um, yeah. I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now...

waaah!

Rat bastards is too good for 'em... maybe mutated cockroach bastards. It won't fix the real problem of them having lost all your stuff, but I do think you should complain vociferously. They stole your hard drive, since they did it without your consent, and even under their draconian repair policy you ought to have some recourse. Did they make you pay for the repair? The store guy should have offered the back up service, yes, even on a busy morning, but the biggest problem as I see it is that they did something so obviously unrelated to the requested repair without so much as a by-your-leave.

(Sorry about the abbreviated phone conversation earlier -- I'll see you tomorrow though.)

yowch. yah, what [livejournal.com profile] heuchera said.
Also, while I can't help with much else, there may be some overlap between your music collection and mine...

I... may get to that. thanks. (particularly since my iTunes never *did* get backed up)

They took your hard drive for a broken hinge?!?! That makes no sense at all. I feel your pain on losing your data- that's my nightmare. That really, really really sucks.

Wow. If I were you, I'd be crying in their store right now. Loudly. Until they admitted that what they did really does border on illeagal.

except it was the applecare people in texas who did it. They guy at the store didn't do anything but fail to remind me to back it up. Although I have considered going in and crying at him to in an attempt to make him remember NEVER to do that again.

Yuk. that really really sucks.

yes. more of the complaining to the store, the store manager, writing bad reviews anywhere they take them for the specific store or to apple in general.

That's absolutely the worst computer repair story I've heard, and there doesn't seem to be a business more designed to upset people than computer repair. There must be some sort of retribution you can extract?!
