me: Where is it? You said you had a branch for me, and now you're not giving it to me! That's not nice, Steve.
Steve: here [giving me a grass seed-head, randomly plucked]

Steve: It's a stalk. I decided to branch out and stalk you.

Steve: I have some ex-girlfriends who think I'm a dog.
me: So they gave you worm pills??

I have decided not to become a Luddite. It would take too long to make tea. Although admittedly I can't use the better microwave when the lights are on in the basement without flipping the breaker, which is not designed to make me appreciate technology more...

It could be worse - your only microwave could be a little 70 watt (ie, underpowered) one :)

We have two-- one that's my mother's favorite style which mounts underneath the cabinets, so we can keep the toaster on the counter under it, but that takes 2 minutes to heat a mug of tea, and one that sits on the other end of the kitchen, and only takes 88 seconds, but if the basement lights are on the breaker checks out at about 30 seconds and then one has to find a flashlight and trek downstairs to the back corner of the basement. And of course whoever was down there gets all upset about being plunged into darkness. But since most of the time there isn't anyone in the basement, one usually doesn't remember to check first...

But yes, I've dealt with totally pathetic hotel microwaves before that take about four minutes to heat tea (in a slightly smaller mug) and furthermore have the stupid little dial thing as the only way to set the timer, so you can't actually tell how long it's set for... and then dim the lights when they're on so you're sort of afraid to plug your computer in while the microwave is running. :)

*grin* One of these days I'll get a full size one - my grandma got me a dorm-sized microwave about six years ago now. And by dorm-sized I mean that I can't put a plate of food inside. I've enjoyed it. I think it drove some of my roommates crazier, though.

Ah, but if you went total Luddite, then you could be heating your house with a wood stove in the winter, and then heating water for tea would take no time at all, because you'd already have a pot of water on the stove :)

oddly enough we already have a wood stove, which provides most of the comfort-heat (as opposed to the thermostat set slightly above 60) for the winter, but it sends most of the heat out instead of up, and so doesn't actually boil water. Hence why I'd have a problem if I were a luddite and still wanted to cook, as the closest I can come to non-technology cooking around here would be to dig the camp stove out of the garage, and that still takes propane tanks. I might have to be both a luddite and a vegetarian, eating only raw stuff, which seems excessive...
