Went to apple store. Talked to manager. He confirmed the drive is gone, and they didn't do an in-store backup. Didn't seem to think it odd that I wasn't warned they might replace stuff or render it down to the base OS... tried to refund the service charge, discovered it's routed through the place that did the service, said call corporate and talk to them. And if they're not nice to me, he can probably give me an iPod or something. sigh. I don't have time to deal with this nonsense-- I've got a novel to rewrite.

damnit!

Anyway, there's a good possibility that the next month or two is going to have a lot of my personal notes on plotline and continuity... I may put them under cut tags if they start getting overwhelmingly long, but anyway, feel free to read them (& even comment) if you're interested but I'm not going to be making a great deal of attempt to clarify what I'm talking about. So be warned.

So much as I hate having to rewrite things I'd finished with, after dealing with the several days of panic to the point of sitting there phsyically shaking because there wasn't anything I could do about it, now I have a functional computer back it doesn't seem that odd to be writing this novel again-- I guess, since I hadn't quite gotten to editing yet, that's the only relationship I've had with the thing. But in any case, I think Scheherazade's plotline is going to be ok-- there are a couple things I haven't sorted out again yet, but her storyline was a sufficiently diverse set of events that most of it is pretty well notated, and most of it worked out relatively well the first time, and shouldn't be too difficult to reconstruct. Well, I hope. Except for the bits at the end, but that's to worry about later.

But Argent I'm worrying about. Because he's following a pretty set chronology, through the continuum of western afterlives, only sped up so that he doesn't have to sit around in elyssium for a couple millenia or whatever, and there were bits of that which didn't actually make sense the first time through. And I don't have any better answers to the time-leap problem than I did before... if you were wandering around Hades/Valhalla/Hell (and all the ones everyone has ever thought of or described...) trying to get back to the era your were born in, how would you skip forward in time?

And... Dunya has a kingdom to inherit in the next chapter. Only she's doing the "how Jack became King" story of making the old king tell her she's a liar, and I don't remember how she did it. I only remember she wasn't going to use the cheat of saying, "well, your majesty, you told me I was a liar when I came in yesterday." And later on, after I've worked out why in the world Sinbad was fishing (& hence catches his true love, who's been turned into a minnow, I forget why...) I have to write more high society for Rahmah... and I'm looking at the entry where I was dealing with that, and thinking "press conference???" I clearly remember a conversation between R & Asiah, but the social bits? And I totally forget why R liked Roland in the first place, 'cause I have this vague recollection she had a crush on him before ever meeting him or anything. And... high society is so much not my thing, which makes it that much harder to write. Not to mention remember...

And my parents are out of town for most of the next two weeks. Which means I get to deal with the joys of stuff like grocery shopping & things. Hate that. Although I now have a fruit (ok, from a totally random conversation earlier about not hating the raspberries just because they're tearing up my legs-- seriously, the fronts of my legs from ankle to mid-thigh are all scratched from briars. With accents on hands & arms for good measure...)

Yeah, I should either be writing about Masauwu or going to sleep now.
