I wouldn't, but it doesn't seem that strange to me (especially among high schoolers, I think). If you think you don't have a chance with the other person and/or are afraid of rejection but want to be around the person, you can set up this sort of platonic relationship and then pine in secret. I knew two people who did this (rather obviously and pathetically, admittedly) for about eight years running.
I have problems seeing people our age doing it, unless one of the two was currently in a relationship. It's all about constructing a facade in order to mantain proximity, in my experience.
I find it hard to believe that to be a random question too. I know someone who claims to have a lot of little "sisters" and "brothers," and it's well known that most of the "sisters" are pining after him in some way, shape, or form. The truth of it though, really, is that he doesn't have "siblings," per-se...he has "children."
I was just terribly confused to learn that one of said "sisters" was interested, because I know I would have fought the designation tooth and claw if it had been me. But this might just be me expecting people to follow my patterns of logic, so the question was more or less to see if I'm just delusional or there are other people who find this weird.
But when I say something is a random question, I mean mostly that it's out of context-- there must have been something that made me think of it, right?
