So, I've done it... I just ordered a serger. (from Amazon, and it's an inexpensive machine that comes with a great many recommendations, including from people I actually know... although it's backordered, so who knows when I'll actually get it) And it's possible I'll be somewhat disappointed with the auto-gathering function (the product description didn't go into that in detail, and
belfebe hasn't tried hers) but since I've never *had* an auto gathering function to play with, and I've always been kind of concerned about the amount of math and trusting the sewing machine's settings it takes, if it doesn't work out I won't be that disappointed. And then there will be serged seams, and fake modern rolled hems-- think napkin edges with the thread overcast around them (as opposed to just the actually rolled kind I can do on my sewing machine) and other fun toys to play with, and I will have to make some non-SCA clothes again. It'll be fun, right? :)
...and there was this theory I had that I wasn't allowed to own a TV before owning a serger... not that I need a tv for anything, or have anywhere to put one... It's just one of those random things in my head like being old enough I'm allowed to go mad (which I haven't particularly done, either.)
